Salt Pump Climbing Co. indoor climbing gym and fitness facility is hosting a Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday September 19. Also that day, Salt Pump will be partnering with Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation to raise funds to initiate an adaptive climbing program.

Sean O’Neill, an athlete with paraplegia, will demonstrate adaptive climbing during the event on Saturday afternoon. Maine Adaptive staff members will be on hand to answer questions about adaptive sports.

“We aim to always have a beneficiary organization at our events and celebrations,” said Taki Miyamoto, Salt Pump owner and general manager. “We look forward to working with Maine Adaptive to get this program off the ground, and sharing with everyone who attends the Grand Opening on Saturday the amazing possibilities and fun to be had with adaptive climbing programs.”

Salt Pump will be open all day long on Saturday for climbing and activities, followed by demonstrations, prizes, refreshments and music. Families are encouraged to try out climbing and participate in educational games from 9am to 4pm, free of charge. A special “Bounty Hunt” climbing competition will also take place from 9am to 3:30pm. A sign planting ceremony, awards and raffle will take place at 4pm, followed by a celebration until 7 pm with DJ’d music, demonstrations, food and refreshments. Premier sponsors for the event are La Sportiva, Sterling Rope Co. and Metolius, with dozens of other generous businesses providing prizes and support.

Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation is the largest year-round adaptive recreation program in the state of Maine for adults and children with physical disabilities. Over 400 volunteers assist our athletes in appreciating the joys and challenges of sports participation. Maine Adaptive provides over 3500 lessons winter and summer, free of charge, thanks to the generous support of individuals, businesses, corporations and foundations that sustain our program every year.
