Climbing Instructor – Hybrid and Outdoor Summer Camps 2019

Position Description: Climbing Instructors work together with the Camp Director, Youth Team Coaches, and our experienced Salt Pump guides to plan and implement climbing adventures for their campers. Our hybrid Inside-Out Camp features three days of indoor climbing in our facility and two days outdoors at crags in Maine and New Hampshire. Our Outdoor Camps are week-long, overnight camps that will be held in the White Mountains in New Hampshire, Acadia National Park, and at Rumney climbing area. During camp, Instructors will facilitate climbing, teach technical climbing skills, and educate campers on outdoor living skills. Campers will range in age from ten to seventeen years old.

Desired Applicant Attributes: We are seeking highly qualified instructors/guides to facilitate our outdoor and hybrid climbing programs.

Applicants for this position should:

  • Have experience guiding/leading trips outdoors.
  • Be a proficient belayer and lead belayer.
  • Have experience camping in a front-country setting (car camping).
    • Instructors are expected to camp from Monday-Friday with campers during week-long, outdoor camps.
  • Expect to take part in and delegate camp chores in a timely manner.
  • Have the skills and patience to keep themselves and others safe and happy in inclement weather while camping – layering systems, self-care, rainy day games, positive attitude, etc.
  • Expect to spend most of the day on their feet, actively engaged with the campers.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times.
  • Enjoy working with children ages 10-17 in an outdoor setting.
  • Place a high value on risk management and have the skills to implement risk management in a variety of settings.
  • Hold a current CPR and BLS certification. WFR preferred.
  • Plan to have FUN! Summer Camp is a place for fun, making friends, and trying new things. We expect our Instructors to foster a fun and positive atmosphere.

Position Details: Instructors should be available to start work on June 29. Camp hours and days depend on the program – more information on these camps can be found here. Priority given to applicants who are available for the entire summer season (through August 30).

Indoor Climbing Instructor – Indoor Summer Camps 2019

Position Description: Climbing Instructors work together with the Camp Director to provide a caring and supportive environment for their campers. During a day at camp, Instructors will facilitate climbing, crafts, games, and other activities. Instructors will also teach campers technical skills (including belaying, rappelling, and mock-leading) and outdoor living skills (tent set-up, compass and map use, etc). Campers will range in age from kindergarten through sixth grade and will have varying climbing experience.

Desired Applicant Attributes: An interest in climbing is a must, but skill level is far less important than your enthusiasm and dedication to the delivery of great service.

Applicants for this position should:

  • Be friendly, caring, and kind.
  • Expect to spend most of the day on their feet, actively engaged with the campers.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times.
  • Enjoy working with children under 12 years old – experience working with this age-group preferred.

Position Details: Instructors will work from June 19-Aug 30, Monday through Friday (no programming July 4th/5th). Camp hours are 8:30am-3:00pm – Instructors should expect to work at least a half-hour on either end of these hours, sometimes more. Position

Youth Programs Manager

Salt Pump youth programs are designed to provide young climbers the space to learn and grow in a supportive and inclusive environment. Our programs serve children ages three to seventeen. This position would oversee our recreational after-school programs, school break and summer camps, and competitive youth teams. We are aiming to add a dedicated, reliable manager who can design flexible curriculum that considers the individual needs of every climber while aiding in skills advancement and growth. We believe climbing is more than a sport; it can also be a vehicle to discover the values of teamwork, responsibility, solid communication, and perseverance.

The Youth Programs Manager, along with the General Manager, will be responsible for the administration of all summer camp, after-school and home school programs, special youth events, and the competitive youth climbing team. This includes curriculum & schedule building, instruction, logistics, staffing & training, marketing, and risk management.

Curriculum and Schedule building

  • Oversee and develop curriculum and lesson plans with team coaches and other program staff for all youth programs
  • Stay up-to-date with school events, holidays, and snow days
  • Be proactive in building the schedule for future school years and seasons

Instruction

  • Assume equal responsibility with other staff by leading climbers and ensuring a fun and nurturing environment
  • Be an example to climbers, parents, and staff of our core values of teamwork, responsibility, solid communication, and perseverance

Logistics, Staffing, and training

  • Work with General Manager and Events Coordinator to anticipate, identify, and resolve all youth programs related issues and staffing needs
  • Work with General Manager and Events Coordinator to hire and schedule appropriate staff for events and programs
  • Communicate in a timely manner with parents, participants, and staff
  • Train, supervise, and deliver appropriate feedback to youth program staff
  • Ensure all data and billing is accurate in our customer database (Rock Gym Pro)

Marketing

  • With support of the marketing team, develop youth programming content for advertising
  • Advise, edit, and approve advertisements and postings

Risk management

  • Recognize, implement, and train other staff members on risk management procedures
  • Implement guidelines and certification requirements for youth climbers

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must enjoy the company of children and adults, alike!
  • Experience working with children of all ages
  • At least 1 year of summer camp/youth recreational program leadership experience
  • Experience writing experiential based curriculum
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Ability to spend many hours per day actively engaged and standing on varying surfaces
  • An interest in and ability to rock climb multiple days per week. Additional skills: proper belay technique, lead climbing and belaying, outdoor experience, gear knowledge
  • Adult & Pediatric CPR and First Aid Certified (will train the right candidate)

Salt Pump Climbing Co is Maine’s premier rock climbing gym. Located in Scarborough, we are 10 minutes from Portland, 10 minutes to the beach, and close to great climbing (Rumney, Pawtuckaway, Shagg Crag, Cathedral & Whitehorse, and more).

We are looking for creative, skilled individuals that want to help us push our program forward with unique movement, professionalism, and an ongoing passion for climbing as a sport. Experience and attention to detail are greatly appreciated. Skilled route setters should expect fair compensation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Partner with Minister of Routesetting to create a world class user experience
  • Comply with SPC safety requirements and adherence
  • Track routes contemporaneously
  • Meet and exceed minimum quality and efficiency standards
  • Set for competitions (boulder & rope)
  • Assist with training new setters
  • Help with general facility maintenance when needed
  • Maintain professional relationships with all SPC staff
  • Any and all duties as assigned

Job Qualifications

Candidates must :

  • Have a background in commercial routesetting (for both adult and youth)
  • Work in an effective and efficient manner to complete tasks
  • Ability to work with and respond to constructive feedback
  • Ability to set/forerun up to V8 and 5.13
  • Should have a USAC L1
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills required

Event Staff

Position Description: Event staff work together with the Event Coordinator to provide an unforgettable, fun, and exciting experience for climbers at Salt Pump events . Events will include birthday parties, Scout groups, school groups, team-builders, and other private events.

Desired Applicant Attributes: An interest in climbing is a must, but the grade you climb is far less important than your enthusiasm and dedication to the delivery of great service.

Position Details: This position is part-time. Open events will be posted weekly by the Event Coordinator - Event Staff will select shifts they can work and communicate with the Event Coordinator. Event staff should be available to work at least two shifts per month - a typical shift is 3 hours and usually on a weekend (though some are weekdays or evenings).
