10 minutes from Portland, 10 minutes from the beach, and less than two hours from some of New England’s finest climbing destinations including Pawtuckaway, Cathedral & Whitehorse, and Shagg Crag.
Salt Pump Portsmouth
10 minutes from the beach, just over an hour from Boston, and less than two hours from some of New England’s finest climbing destinations including Pawtuckaway, Cathedral & Whitehorse, and Rumney.
Position Description: Our desk team are key team members that are the face of the organization and the welcoming energy that helps make Salt Pump the comfortable environment we always endeavor to be. Duties include being responsible for risk management, excellent customer service, retail sales and stocking, teaching Intro to Climbing Classes, and more.
Applicants for this position should:

- Possess good verbal communication skills.

- Have experience with customer service - POS system experience preferred.
- Have an understanding of and passion for rock climbing.

- Understand the risks involved with rock climbing.
- Be able to pass a top-rope test in our facility.
- Be prepared to engage our customers and members in an upbeat, outgoing, and positive manner in order to provide everyone with an extraordinary experience.
Position Details: This is a part-time position. Pay and pay increases are based on a combination of performance and length of employment. Applicants should expect to work weekends and some evenings. Desk and Program Staff will have opportunities to instruct with our Youth Programs and Adult Programs.
Pay starts at $15/hr. Working at least one regular shift per week qualifies you for a free membership. Staff get access to pro-deals, programming and other fun opportunities.

Position: Event Staff
Position Description: Event staff work together with the Event Coordinator to provide an unforgettable, fun, and exciting experience for climbers at Salt Pump events . Events are often birthday parties, but will also include Scout groups, school groups, team-builders, and other private events.
Desired Applicant Attributes: An interest in climbing is a must, but the grade you climb is far less important than your enthusiasm and dedication to the delivery of great service.

Position Details: This position is part-time. Open events will be posted weekly by the Event Coordinator - Event Staff will select shifts they can work and communicate with the Event Coordinator. Event staff are asked to work a minimum of two Events per month - a typical shift is 2.5 hours and are mostly on the weekend - though can be on a weekday or evening.

Position Description:
Salt Pump Climbing is seeking individuals who are motivated and passionate about introducing the world of climbing to our After School youth program participants.
Our Instructors will work with our Youth Programs Director and other instructors to help foster a fun and safe environment in which our young climbers can learn more about the world of climbing. Our Instructors will help to grow their passion for this sport, expand their knowledge and skill set, and most importantly have FUN.
We provide shadowing and curriculum for all instructors as a part of the onboarding and training process. This is a part-time position with shifts in the afternoons and evenings Monday through Friday.

About Salt Pump Climbing Company: Salt Pump Climbing Company is a Portland Maine area climbing gym owned and operated by climbers. Our mission is to be the leading community resource for climbing, adventure, and a healthy, active lifestyle. Our love for climbing and the community that surrounds it is at the heart of our business. Our focus is to provide the best experience possible that reflects the core values and culture of the greater world of climbing.
Position Description: The primary responsibility of the Climbing Coach is, under the direction of the head coach, to assist with the weekly practices of the Salt Pump’s competitive youth climbing program. Hours may vary from week to week with flexibility possible depending on whether additional responsibilities are desired such as route-setting and coaching/training for Salt Pump adult programs.
Responsibilities:
- Provide expert instruction in climbing techniques, safety practices, and training methodologies to individuals and groups.
- Lead weekly practices throughout the school year.
- Motivate athletes of all levels and ages;
- Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 30lbs;
- Manage the inherent risks involved with climbing and act as a guide to kids and parents on gym etiquette;
- Supervise climbers during practices while upholding SP’s values.
- Assist in managing disciplinary issues
- Offer personalized coaching and feedback to each climber to help them overcome challenges, improve weaknesses, and achieve their climbing goals.
- Collaborate with other coaches and managers to ensure program coherence and alignment with facility goals and objectives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
- Minimum of 1 year USAC coaching experience
- Strong communication and organization skills
- Be friendly, caring, and kind
- Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times
- Background in climbing and/or outdoor adventure
- Route setting experience a plus
- Ideally climbs V7+
- Must have TR and Lead Climbing Certification
- Must be available to coach competitions on Saturdays and attend all USAC Championship events

Salary and Benefits: The time commitment for this position is 7.5 to 10hrs per week; depending on additional responsibilities (such as route setting), there can be a more for the appropriate candidate.
- Pay commensurate with experience. Starts at $18-$20/hr.

- Must be available to coach competitions on Saturdays and attend all USAC Championship events
- Must commit to a consistent weekly schedule throughout the session/season
- Must be available for the session/season (e.g. personal vacations should align with weeks practice is cancelled for vacations, or happen off-season)
- Must be able to work a minimum of 2 shifts (Mon-Fri);
- Must attend mandatory All Staff meetings.
