Position

Climbing Coach - Youth and Adult

The primary responsibilities of the Climbing Coach is to lead Salt Pump’s competitive youth climbing program and the adult training team. Hours may vary from week to week with flexibility possible depending on whether additional responsibilities are desired such as routesetting. 

Responsibilities to be shared with other Salt Pump Climbing Coaches:

  • Responsible for all Salt Pump competitive youth team programming, including team selection, training of staff, curriculum building, running of training sessions, and attending competitions (local and away).
  • Managing any disciplinary issues with the support of the Youth Programs Director.
  • Responsible for all Adult Team programming, including scheduling, curriculum building and implementation, paperwork and communication.
  • Responsible for all administrative duties, including scheduling and registration for tryouts, practices, and competitions, as well as communications with parents and team members.
  • Responsible for maintaining a professional demeanor at all times. Salt Pump Coaches are at the forefront of our community and must be considerate and have a positive, professional attitude both while working and while climbing on personal time. 
  • Routesetting under the guidance of our Head Routesetter and as a part of the Salt Pump setting team. 

Qualifications:

  • USAC Coaching Certification 
  • Coaching experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills (knowledge of Rock Gym Pro helpful)
  • Be friendly, caring, and kind
  • Enjoy working with climbers of all abilities, ages, and experience levels
  • Background in climbing and/or outdoor adventure
  • Route setting experience is helpful
  • Adult & Pediatric CPR and First Aid Certified (will train the right candidate)
  • Ability to spend many hours per day actively engaged and standing on varying surfaces

Salary and Benefits: The time commitment for this position is full time, but can be flexible for the right candidate. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience.

Position

Route Setter

Our setters are a vital part of the Salt Pump experience. Our team works hard to create unique and visually appealing climbs for climbers of all experience levels.

Salt Pump cares about our setters and focus on a healthy setting routine. We are safety conscious, team oriented, creative and like to eat tasty food. Our Lead Resets are done from a lift, TRs on rope, Boulders from a ladder :). The team warms up well before forerunning, are into preventative care and also like to climb outside (and surf too). 

The part-time setter will work with the Head Setter to ensure quality, density, diversity and proper distribution throughout the gym. Route Setters are expected to set interesting and thought provoking climbs that are both instructional and challenging.

Expectations :

  • Conduct oneself with integrity, honesty, and good character at all times
  • Efficiently set routes and boulders for all climbing abilities that meet Salt Pump’s quality standards
  • Must have an advanced understanding of climbing movement from V0 & 5.6 to V8 & 5.13a and should be able to set/forerun routes (TR & Lead & Boulders) within this spectrum
  • Uphold safety standards and best practices
  • Arrive at work with a psyched, can do attitude
  • Perform gym maintenance tasks safely and effectively
  • Must have ability to seek, accept, and give constructive feedback to and from fellow setters and the community
  • Set for competitions and special events throughout the year, on an as needed basis
  • Be a team player
  • Maintain a positive work environment
  • Preferably have at least 1 year of commercial routesetting experience

Preferred qualifications: USA Climbing Route Setting Certification (Level 1 or higher)

Salary and Benefits

The time commitment for this position is part-time but, depending on additional responsibilities (such as coaching), can be a full time (40 hours a week) position. Membership for employee's significant other, access to pro-deals, and one free pair of shoes per year. Pay and benefits commensurate with experience.

Event Staff

Position Description: Event staff work together with the Event Coordinator to provide an unforgettable, fun, and exciting experience for climbers at Salt Pump events. Events will include birthday parties, Scout groups, school groups, team-builders, and other private events. 

Desired Applicant Attributes: An interest in climbing is a must, but the grade you climb is far less important than your enthusiasm and dedication to the delivery of great service.

Applicants for this position should:

  • Be friendly, caring, and kind.
  • Expect to spend entire shift on their feet, actively engaged with the participants.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times.
  • Enjoy working with children and adults alike.
  • Plan to have FUN! Salt Pump is a place for fun, making friends, and trying new things. We expect our staff to foster a fun and positive atmosphere.

Position Details: This position is part-time. Open events will be posted weekly by the Event Coordinator - Event Staff will select shifts they can work and communicate with the Event Coordinator. Event staff are required to work a minimum of two shifts per month - a typical shift is 3 hours and may be on the weekend, weekday, or evening.
