Position

Indoor Climbing Instructor – Indoor Summer Camps 2020

Position Description: Climbing Instructors work together with the Camp Director to provide a caring and supportive environment for their campers. During a day at camp, Instructors will facilitate climbing, crafts, games, and other activities. Instructors will also teach campers technical skills (including belaying, rappelling, and mock-leading) and outdoor living skills (tent set-up, compass and map use, etc). Campers will range in age from kindergarten through sixth grade and will have varying climbing experience.

Desired Applicant Attributes: An interest in climbing is a must, but skill level is far less important than your enthusiasm and dedication to the delivery of great service.

Applicants for this position should:

  • Be friendly, caring, and kind.

  • Expect to spend most of the day on their feet, actively engaged with the campers.

  • Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times.

  • Enjoy working with children under 12 years old – experience working with this age-group preferred.

  • Plan to have FUN! Summer Camp is a place for fun, making friends, and trying new things. We expect our Instructors to foster a fun and positive atmosphere.

Position Details: Instructors will work from June 15-Aug 28, Monday through Friday. Camp hours are 8:30am-3:00pm – Instructors should expect to work at least a half-hour on either end of these hours, sometimes more. Priority given to applicants who are available for the entire summer season.

Position

Outdoor Climbing Instructor – Hybrid and Outdoor Summer Camps 2020

Position Description: Climbing Instructors work together with the Camp Director, Youth Team Coaches, and our experienced Salt Pump guides to plan and implement climbing adventures for their campers. Our hybrid Inside-Out Camp features three days of indoor climbing in our facility and two days outdoors at crags in Maine and New Hampshire. Our Outdoor Camps are week-long, overnight camps that will be held in the White Mountains in New Hampshire, Acadia National Park, and at Rumney climbing area. During camp, Instructors will facilitate climbing, teach technical climbing skills, and educate campers on outdoor living skills. Campers will range in age from ten to seventeen years old.

Desired Applicant Attributes: We are seeking highly qualified instructors/guides to facilitate our outdoor and hybrid climbing programs.

Applicants for this position should:

  • Have experience guiding/leading trips outdoors.

  • Be a proficient belayer and lead belayer.

  • Have experience camping in a front-country setting (car camping). 

    • Instructors are expected to camp from Monday-Friday with campers during week-long, outdoor camps.

  • Expect to take part in and delegate camp chores in a timely manner.

  • Have the skills and patience to keep themselves and others safe and happy in inclement weather while camping – layering systems, self-care, rainy day games, positive attitude, etc.

  • Expect to spend most of the day on their feet, actively engaged with the campers.

  • Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times.

  • Enjoy working with children ages 10-17 in an outdoor setting.

  • Place a high value on risk management and have the skills to implement risk management in a variety of settings.

  • Hold a current CPR and BLS certification. WFR preferred.

Position

Climbing Coach - Youth and Adult

The primary responsibilities of the Climbing Coach is to lead Salt Pump’s competitive youth climbing program and the adult training team. Hours may vary from week to week with flexibility possible depending on whether additional responsibilities are desired such as routesetting. 

Responsibilities to be shared with other Salt Pump Climbing Coaches:

  • Responsible for all Salt Pump competitive youth team programming, including team selection, training of staff, curriculum building, running of training sessions, and attending competitions (local and away).
  • Managing any disciplinary issues with the support of the Youth Program Manager.
  • Responsible for all Adult Team programming, including scheduling, curriculum building and implementation, paperwork and communication.
  • Responsible for all administrative duties, including scheduling and registration for tryouts, practices, and competitions, as well as communications with parents and team members.
  • Responsible for maintaining a professional demeanor at all times. Salt Pump Coaches are at the forefront of our community and must be considerate and have a positive, professional attitude both while working and while climbing on personal time. 
  • Routesetting under the guidance of our Head Routesetter and as a part of the Salt Pump setting team. 

Qualifications:

  • USAC Coaching Certification 
  • Coaching experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills (knowledge of Rock Gym Pro helpful)
  • Be friendly, caring, and kind
  • Enjoy working with climbers of all abilities, ages, and experience levels
  • Background in climbing and/or outdoor adventure
  • Route setting experience is helpful
  • Adult & Pediatric CPR and First Aid Certified (will train the right candidate)
  • Ability to spend many hours per day actively engaged and standing on varying surfaces

Salary and Benefits: The time commitment for this position is full time, but can be flexible for the right candidate. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience.

Position

Desk & Program Staff

Position Description: Salt Pump staff often wear multiple hats. Our desk staff are responsible for risk management, excellent customer service, retail sales and stocking, teaching Intro to Climbing Classes, and more.

Applicants for this position should:

  • Be friendly, caring, and kind.
  • Expect to spend most of the day on their feet, actively engaged with customers and members.
  • Possess good verbal communication skills.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times.
  • Have experience with customer service - POS system experience preferred. 
  • Have an understanding of and passion for rock climbing.
  • Have good time management and be able to multitask.
  • Understand the risks involved in rock climbing.
  • Be able to pass a top-rope belay test in our facility. 
  • Be prepared to engage our customers and members in an upbeat, outgoing, and positive manner in order to provide everyone with an extraordinary experience.

Position Details: This can be a full- or part-time position. Desk and Program Staff will have opportunities to instruct with our Youth Programs and Adult Programs. Pay and pay increases are based on a combination of performance and seniority. Applicants should expect to work weekends and evenings.

Event Staff

Position Description: Event staff work together with the Event Coordinator to provide an unforgettable, fun, and exciting experience for climbers at Salt Pump events. Events will include birthday parties, Scout groups, school groups, team-builders, and other private events. 

Desired Applicant Attributes: An interest in climbing is a must, but the grade you climb is far less important than your enthusiasm and dedication to the delivery of great service.

  • Expect to spend entire shift on their feet, actively engaged with the participants.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times.
  • Enjoy working with children and adults alike.
  • Plan to have FUN! Salt Pump is a place for fun, making friends, and trying new things. We expect our staff to foster a fun and positive atmosphere.

Position Details: This position is part-time. Open events will be scheduled based on availability. Event staff are required to keep an updated availability and to work any shifts assigned to them within that availability. Event staff are required to work a minimum of two shifts per month, contingent on amount of events scheduled, - a typical shift is 3 hours and may be on the weekend, weekday, or evening.
